The moment we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. He works within us, guiding, teaching, and empowering us to fulfill God’s purpose. But what exactly are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and how can we apply them to our lives?

Spiritual Gifts from God
The Holy Spirit is our Counselor, promised by Jesus in John 14:16-17:
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever- the Spirit of truth.”
This promise shows us that the Spirit is not just a passive presence in our lives but an active guide who empowers us to live out our faith.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus assures His followers of the Spirit’s power:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
This power enables us to use our spiritual gifts to witness to others and fulfill God’s mission.
The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual gifts are not for personal gain, but to serve the greater good of the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:7 reminds us:
“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”
When we use our gifts, we reflect God’s glory and serve others, bringing them closer to Him.
It’s important to note that spiritual gifts differ from the fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are the character traits we develop as we grow in Christ (Galatians 5:22-23). While we all possess the fruits of the Spirit, spiritual gifts are unique abilities given to us by the Spirit for specific purposes.
A List of Biblical Spiritual Gifts
In 1 Corinthians 12:8-11, Paul outlines several spiritual gifts:
“To one there is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” NKJV.
And in 1 Corinthians 12:28, he mentions these gifts:
“And in the church God appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.”
In Romans 12:6-8, Paul lists gifts that are meant to serve and build up the church:
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously, if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.”

How Many Spiritual Gifts are There?
The exact number of spiritual gifts varies, with lists ranging from 7 to 21. Some believe certain miraculous gifts, like healing or tongues, were only for the early church, while others see them as gifts that can still be active today.
The key point is that God knows you intimately and gives you the gift He deems right for you, empowering you to serve His kingdom.
Applying Your Spiritual Gifts
As 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 reminds us, there are “varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit,” and each gift is meant to be used for God’s purposes. No one person can possess all the gifts, but together, we make up the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11-12 shows us that spiritual gifts equip us to serve one another and build up the church:
“It was he [Christ] who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.”
Each gift is vital in fulfilling God’s mission. Look for opportunities to serve by using your gifts.
As you use your gifts, you will grow in your relationship with God and fulfill His purpose for you.
How Do I Find My Spiritual Gifts?
To discover your spiritual gifts, seek God’s guidance through prayer and study. Volunteer in different areas of service and pay attention to where God is leading you.
Spiritual gift assessments can also be helpful, but remember that God may call you to serve in ways you might not expect.
By understanding the gifts of the Holy Spirit, you can live out God’s calling for your life. Embrace your gift and use it to bring glory to God and help those around you grow in faith!
