God often uses symbols to communicate His spiritual truths, and that includes numbers. The number 40 is symbolic of testing and trials; mentioned over 150 times in Scripture.

Let’s look at several key examples from the Bible where God used the number 40 to bring about His plans, and how it teaches us to hold on in hope.

The Flood: 40 Days and 40 Nights (Genesis 7:12)

In the book of Genesis, God makes a covenant with Noah—a promise that He would spare him and his family from the destruction and judgment that was coming. Noah faithfully follows all of God’s instructions and builds the ark. God sends the animals, Noah, and his family into the ark and shuts the door.

The rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights, covering “all the high mountains under the entire heavens” (v19). After 40 days, Noah opened the window he had made in the ark. The skies were blue; the storm had ceased, and a wind blew to dry out the land.

Tomorrow was Day 41—Noah and his family had made it through the storm and prepared to step into a new world and start their lives afresh.

Scripture Reference:
“And the rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.” — Genesis 7:12.

Application: If you’re in a season where it feels like the rain won’t stop, remember that God has promised a new day. Just as the rain stopped after 40 days, your season of struggle and pain will end. Hold on, because Day 41 is coming, and a new beginning is on the way!

The Israelites in the Wilderness: 40 Years (Deuteronomy 8:2)

The Israelite’s wandered in the desert for 40 years before they reached the Promised Land. God could have taken them on an 11-day route to their destination. But the Israelite’s were rebellious, hard-hearted, and stubborn. He didn’t abandon them but led them throughout their journey, providing them with everything they needed.

They faced tests, learned lessons, and trusted God throughout their trek. Though it must have felt like an eternity, God led them to the land He had promised them.

Scripture Reference:
“Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commands.” Deuteronomy 8:2.

Application: You might walk through a desert season and feel like it’s lasting forever. But remember, you don’t walk alone! God is by your side in your wilderness! Wilderness seasons can be a time of spiritual growth and lead us into a closer relationship with God. They can strengthen our character and teach us valuable lessons about ourselves if we let them.

Trust Him to bring you to your land of promise. Your Day 41 is coming!

Goliath Taunts Israel: 40 Days (1 Samuel 17:45)

The Philistine and Israelite armies gathered their forces for war. For 40 days, Goliath came forward every morning and evening and took his stand. Goliath, over 9 feet tall, terrified the Israelites. David arrived at the camp on the morning of Day 41. Dismayed that no one else would fight him, David volunteered. From his perspective, David saw a man defying the Almighty God.

Scripture Reference:
David knew God would go with him into battle and declared, “I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel.” 1 Samuel 17:45.

Application: Are you in an impossible situation? In the fight of your life? It’s all about viewing these giant problems with faith, trust, and from God’s perspective. Remember, you are not alone; He is in the battle with you. Day 41 brings victory!

Jesus’ Temptation in the Wilderness: 40 Days (Matthew 4:1-2)

Before Jesus began His earthly ministry, He spent 40 days in the wilderness, fasting and praying. During that time, Satan tempted Him, but He overcame every temptation by relying on the Word of God. It was a time of testing and preparation, but after the 40 days, Jesus began His powerful ministry.

Scripture Reference:
“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.” Matthew 4:1-2.

Application: Jesus didn’t enter the wilderness by accident. His 40 days in the wilderness were essential to preparing Him for the powerful ministry ahead. If you’re in a season of spiritual battle or preparation, don’t give up. Just as Day 41 marked the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, your time of testing will reveal your breakthrough, purpose, and calling.

Elijah’s Journey to Horeb: 40 Days (1 Kings 19:8)

Elijah fled from Queen Jezebel and went on a journey into the wilderness, where he traveled for 40 days and nights to reach Mount Horeb. During this time, Elijah was exhausted, feeling as though his work for the Lord had been in vain. But at the end of his 40-day journey, God spoke to him in a gentle whisper and gave him renewed purpose.

Scripture Reference:
“So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.” 1 Kings 19:8.

Application: Like Elijah, you might feel weary or discouraged in your service to God. But hold on to the hope that your Day 41 is coming. Are you listening for God’s guidance? It might come as a whisper. Step back and listen humbly and quietly for His direction and wisdom.

Hold On to Hope: Day 41 is Coming

Whatever your “40 days” look like—whether you’re facing struggles, trials, or seasons of waiting—remember this: your Day 41 is coming. God is faithful, and He will bring you through. The struggles you face are not permanent, and the breakthrough you’re longing for is on its way.

Scripture to Claim:
“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5.

If you’re in a season that feels like it’s dragging on, take heart. Hold fast to God’s promises and keep moving forward in faith.

Your Day 41-your breakthrough-is just around the corner. Trust that God is preparing you for something even greater.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You that we can trust in Your perfect timing. Help us to hold on in faith, knowing that just as You brought new beginnings after 40 days in the Bible, You are bringing a new day into our lives as well. Strengthen our hearts to keep going, and remind us that Day 41 is coming, filled with hope, breakthrough, and Your purposes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

As you reflect on these examples, remember that God works in seasons. After 40 days (or 40 years!), there’s always a new beginning on Day 41. Keep holding on to the hope that God’s plans for you are greater than you can imagine, and your breakthrough is just ahead!

Blessings!
