Life brings challenges that test our faith. Whether it is financial struggles, health issues, broken relationships, or deep loss, trusting God in difficult times is not always easy. Yet the Bible reminds us again and again that God is faithful, even when our circumstances are not.

How can we hold on to God when everything around us feels uncertain? Let’s find practical steps, encouraging Bible verses, and examples of people in Scripture who trusted God through their trials.
What It Means to Trust God
To trust God is to put our full confidence in His love, wisdom, and power. It means believing He is always good, even when we cannot see the good in our situation.
Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and He will make your paths straight.”
Acknowledging God “in all our ways” means we trust Him in every area of our life. In His teachings about worry, Jesus emphasized this same truth. In Matthew 6:33, He asks us to turn to God first for help, fill our hearts with His desires, and become more like Him in character:
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” NLT.
Bible Characters Who Trusted God in Difficult Times
- Job: Job lost his health, wealth, and family, yet he declared,“Though He slay me, yet will I hope in him.” (Job 13:15a) His story shows us that trust is not based on circumstances but on who God is.
- Daniel: Facing the lion’s den, Daniel chose prayer and obedience to God over safety and comfort. God honored his faith and protected him. (Daniel 6)
- Paul and Silas: Imprisoned for their faith, they prayed and sang hymns at midnight (Acts 16:25). Their trust in God brought them their freedom and even led to salvation for the jailer and his family.
- Mary, the mother of Jesus: Faced with uncertainty and great risk, Mary trusted God’s plan for her life when she said, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38) Her quiet obedience reminds us that trusting God does not remove fear, but it chooses faith anyway.
Each of these stories show us how trusting God gives us strength in times of crisis and relieves our fear and worry.
Practical Steps for Trusting God in Difficult Times
Six important steps to help you build trust:
•Pray! When we call out to Him, He immediately hears and draws close to us. (Psalm 145:18). A prayer for trusting God tells Him your fears, doubts, and needs. He will help you work through your concerns and give you the wisdom and guidance you need.
•Cling to Scripture: Write down Bible verses that remind you of God’s promises and refer to them often for comfort. For example, Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
•Remember His faithfulness: Look back on times when God carried you through difficult times before. Remembering the times He has interceded, protected, and saved you in the past helps bolster your faith and trust that He will do it again. Keeping a journal of answered prayers can strengthen your trust when new challenges arise.
•Surround yourself with encouragement: Share your struggles with trusted Christian friends who can pray with you and point you back to God’s truth and love.
•Surrender daily: Trust Him anew each morning. Begin your day by asking God to guide your steps and end the day thanking Him for being present, no matter what it held. One practical way we grow in trust is by choosing to turn toward God instead of pulling away– something Scripture repeatedly calls us to do.
•Praise Him: Praise shifts the focus from our problems to His power, presence, comfort and hope. I love to do this through music, because worship music is packed with truth and encouragement that lift me up.

Bible Verses to Hold On To
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, who confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes, its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8. What a beautiful promise!
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28. He can turn every circumstance around for our long-lasting good.
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! For I have overcome the world.” John 16:33. Jesus tells us to expect troubles, but His victory at the cross is the foundation for our peace in Him.
“The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.” Nahum 1:7.
“When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid.” Psalm 56:3-4a. Scripture is rich with comforting Psalms for hard seasons.
Why Me, God? When Trials Feel Personal
Sometimes the hardest part of trusting God in difficult times is not the trial itself, but the lingering question, “Why me, God?” Trials can feel deeply personal, leaving us wondering why God would allow this season of pain.
While Scripture does not always give us clear answer, it does remind us that God sees, cares, and walks with us through every struggle. Even in our questions, He invites us to bring our honest questions to Him and trust He is working in ways we cannot yet see.
Final Encouragement
Trusting God in difficult times does not mean pretending everything is fine. It means choosing to believe that God is with you, working for your good, and holding you in His hands.
Like Job, Daniel, Paul, Silas, and Mary, you can stand firm knowing the the God who was faithful to them is the same God who is faithful to you.
Lean into His Word, bring your heart to Him in prayer, and surround yourself with reminders of His goodness. When life feels uncertain, God is unshakeable.
