How To Stop Worrying and Trust God

If you’ve woken up at 3am with your mind racing, you’re not alone. Worry can quietly settle into our hearts and follow us through everyday life. We worry about our children, our marriages, our finances, our health, and the future we cannot see. Some days the weight of it is exhausting.

If you have ever wondered how to stop worrying and truly trust God, you are not alone. The Bible does not shame us for our anxious thoughts. Instead, His Word meets us with compassion and points us toward a deeper peace rooted in God’s faithfulness. In this post, we will explore what the Bible says about worry, why it is so common, and how trusting God can help us break free from anxious thoughts, one day at a time.

Why Do Christian Women Struggle with Worry?

Why do we worry? We know in our hearts that worry solves nothing, but our anxious thoughts kick in as a first response to our problems.

Sometimes it’s the fear of the unknown. We get an unexpected test result, and our minds spin toward the worst-case scenario. Other times, worry and anxiety stem from a desire for control- we try to manage everything on our own, convinced that if we just think it through enough times, we will find peace.

We love our children intensely, but that love can quietly turn into an unhealthy fear of loss. God did not bless us with children to keep us fearful.

I distinctly remember getting a panicked phone call from one of my college-aged children one evening, struggling with a problem they could not solve. I spent the entire night tossing and turning, running through every possible scenario.

When I spoke to them the next morning, they had already resolved it and moved on, and I realized I had spent the entire night carrying something that was never mine to carry.

Worry wears us down spiritually. It has us picking up burdens God never meant for us to bear, draining our peace and pulling us away from the One who wants to carry them for us.

But there is good news: God has a lot to say about this very struggle.

What Does the Bible Say About Worry and Anxiety?

The Bible speaks directly and tenderly to the issue of worry. Jesus understood how easily our hearts become anxious, especially when we are facing uncertainty and pressure, and He addressed it head-on.

In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus gives an entire sermon on worry, beginning with these words: “Do not worry” – not about your life, what you will eat or drink, about your body, or what you will wear.

Then in verse 27 He asks, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”

He knows exactly how worry affects us: it damages our health, consumes our thoughts, keeps us unproductive, affects the way we treat others, and replaces our trust in God with fear.

In verse 30, Jesus gently identifies the root cause of worry: “O you of little faith.” Worry often reflects a lack of trust in his love and care for us. It leads us down the path of fear rather than contentment with his plan.

Philippians 4:6 gives us something even more practical: “Do not worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done.” (NLT.)

Do not worry about anything? That can feel impossible. What about our jobs? Our marriages? Our children’s futures or our health? God is not dismissing those concerns; He is redirecting us to the only place where real peace is found.

Is Worrying a Sin? What God Really Wants You to Know

When my son was in back-to-back deployments in Iraq, I worried about him every single day. I also prayed for Him and placed Him- as best I could- in God’s hands. Both things were true at the same time.

If you have ever sat by a loved one’s hospital bed or waited by the phone for news that felt too frightening to imagine, you know this tension well.
Do you think Mary and Joseph were worried when they lost Jesus for 3 days after Passover? Scripture tells us exactly what Mary said when she finally found Him: “Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” (Luke 2:48).

Worry is a natural human emotion. So is anger, and Jesus experienced that emotion. Did He sin in His anger? Never.

So, no, the emotion of worry in itself is not a sin. It is what we do with our worry that can lead us toward sin.

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”  (1Peter 5:7) The problem is not that we feel anxious; it is when we refuse to release those anxieties and choose instead to carry them as a way of life.

Worry can quietly give way to sinful patterns: impatience, anger, selfishness, and a growing tendency to dwell on our problems rather than trust in God’s plan. And when Jesus calls us not to worry, He is not condemning us; He is tenderly calling us to give Him our worries.

He ends His sermon with the answer to our problem: “Seek first His kingdom.” (Matthew 6:33) That simply means to turn to Him first. Return to the One you trust to guide you through every storm.

How to Give Your Worries to God (Not Just Say You Will)

Giving our worries to God sounds simple until we actually try to do it. Here are 5 practical ways to make that surrender real.

God knows worry is an incredible waste of time. It causes us to focus on details that we can’t control; dwelling on what could go wrong, or what will happen in the future.

Here are 5 ways to give your worries to God:

#1 Pray and keep praying. Scripture does not tell us to ignore our worries. It tells us to bring them honestly before God and trust Him with what we cannot control. Put your worry in His hands- literally tell Him, out loud if you need to, “I am handing this to you.” Then pray for His peace to replace the anxiety. And when you feel yourself reaching back to pick it up again, repeat your prayer. This is not a onetime act; it is a practice. There have been times where I have repeated this phrase many times throughout the day.

#2 Reframe worry into a concern you can act on. There is a real difference between worry and concern. Worry keeps us stuck in a loop of fear, dwelling on what could go wrong. Concern moves us to action. For example:

Worry: “I’m afraid I will miss my flight.” Concern with a plan: Make a packing list, set your timeline, gather your documents, and leave early.

Ask God what He would have you do, then take the steps He shows you and leave the rest with Him.

#3 Choose to trust daily. Trusting God is not a feeling we wait for. It is a daily decision. The more we know Him through Scripture, prayer, and the faithfulness He has already shown us, the stronger that trust will become. No matter what you are facing today, He is trustworthy. Surrender your worries to Him and lean on His promises to increase your trust.

#4 Count your blessings- on paper. When worry takes over, our minds narrow; we see only the problem in front of us and forget everything God has already done. Writing out your blessings, even three small ones, forces your thoughts to shift.

This does not minimize your struggle; it reminds you that God has been faithful before, and He will be faithful again. Gratitude is one of the most powerful antidotes to anxiety because it is impossible to be truly thankful and truly consumed by worry at the same time.

#5 Anchor your mind in Scripture. His Word is powerful and transformative. Find verses that address your worry and replace “what if” with “God can.”
Write them in a journal, put them on a sticky note where you will see them throughout the day, or change your phone’s wallpaper to your favorite promise. His Word does not just comfort; it renews our spirits.

Bible Verses for Anxious Women to Hold Onto

God’s Word is full of promises for the anxious heart. Here are a few to hold on to when worry becomes loud:

John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Today’s culture keeps us in information overload. His Word cuts through the noise with peace the world simply cannot offer.

2 Thessalonians 3:16: “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way.”

There is no situation so tangled that His peace cannot reach it.

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

When we stop leaning on our own anxious reasoning and turn to Him, He takes over the navigation.

Psalm 23:4: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me.”

He does not promise that the valley won’t come. He promises that he will walk through it with you.

Jeremiah 17:7-8: “Blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.”

What a word-picture! Deep roots do not panic in the drought, and neither will we when we root ourselves in Him.

How to Break Free from Worry- One Day at a Time

Jesus tells us not to worry about tomorrow– “each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34) That verse has become my personal reset button when worry creeps in.

Learning how to stop worrying and trust God is not a problem we solve once. It is a daily, sometimes hourly, return to His presence. His peace is not something we perfect; it is something we choose, again and again, in the small moments of each ordinary day.

When worry shows up, we do not have to fight it alone. We can recognize it for what it is: a signal to turn back to God and hand it over before it takes root. Concern yourself with today. Trust Him with tomorrow. He will give you everything you need to keep walking forward in faith.

A Prayer for Letting Go of Worry

Lord, You see the worries weighing on my heart. Some feel too heavy to carry, and others I have held onto far too long. Help me release my anxious thoughts into Your care and trust You with what I cannot control. When I am tempted to reach back and pick them up again, remind me of Your faithfulness. Teach me to rest in Your promises and walk forward in faith, knowing You are always with me. Amen.

Blessings of peace!
